Zodiac signs
The 12 signs, in depth.
Dates, elements and ruling planets — plus the myths and the real constellations behind every sign of the zodiac.
The four elements
Fire, earth, air, water
Each element holds three signs. Signs that share an element are said to understand each other easily.
| Element | Signs | Theme |
|---|---|---|
| Fire | Aries, Leo, Sagittarius | Energy, drive, self-expression |
| Earth | Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn | Practicality, the body, what lasts |
| Air | Gemini, Libra, Aquarius | Ideas, communication, connection |
| Water | Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces | Feeling, intuition, bonds |
The three modalities
Cardinal, fixed, mutable
In the tropical zodiac the cardinal signs start the seasons: Aries at the March equinox, Cancer at the June solstice, Libra at the September equinox, Capricorn at the December solstice.
| Modality | Signs | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Cardinal | Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn | Begins each season — initiating |
| Fixed | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius | The middle of each season — sustaining |
| Mutable | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces | The end of each season — adapting |
Signs vs. constellations
Why your sign isn't where the stars are.
Zodiac signs are twelve equal 30° slices of the Sun's yearly path, counted from the March equinox. Zodiac constellations are star patterns of very different sizes — the Sun spends about 45 days in Virgo and only about a week in Scorpius.
Around the end of the fifth century BCE, Babylonian astronomers divided the sky into twelve equal signs, by analogy with twelve schematic 30-day months. Since then, the slow wobble of Earth's axis — precession, about one degree every 72 years — has shifted the signs and the constellations roughly one sign apart.
That's why the “new 13th sign” story keeps coming back. The Sun does pass through Ophiuchus every December, but Western astrology follows the seasons, not the constellations. As NASA put it: “We didn't change any zodiac signs… we just did the math.”
The Big Three
Your Sun sign is a third of the story.
Your Sun sign comes from your birthday. Your Moon and Rising signs need the full date, time and place — and they change far faster.
Sun — your core self and identity. Changes sign about once a month.
Moon — your emotions and inner needs. Changes sign about every 2.3 days.
Rising — how you meet the world. Changes about every two hours on average.
