Birth chart guide
No birth time? Here's what still works.
Your date and place give you most of your chart. Your time unlocks the rest. Here's what depends on it, where to find it — and what Velara does when you can't.
Doesn't need your time
Still yours
- Your Sun sign — unless you were born on a day the Sun changed sign.
- Mercury through Pluto — they rarely change sign within a day.
- Most aspects between the planets.
Needs your time
Time-sensitive
- Rising sign (Ascendant) and Midheaven.
- The twelve houses — where each planet shows up in life.
- Your Moon sign, if the Moon changed sign on your birthday.
Where to look
Finding your birth time.
Your birth certificate. In many countries the full or long-form certificate records the time; a short version often doesn't.
Hospital or registry records. Birth records sometimes hold the time even when the certificate leaves it out.
Family. Parents' memories, baby books, announcements and letters. Even “early morning” or “just after lunch” helps.
A remembered time is worth entering, but treat it as approximate: rounded times like 12:00 or 6:00 are common.
In Velara
Three ways to enter your time.
Velara never invents a birth time. It calculates what your information supports — and labels the rest.
Exact time
Full chart: Rising sign, Midheaven and Placidus houses (Whole Sign beyond the polar circles).
Part of the day
Morning, noon, afternoon, evening or night. Velara places the Rising sign with Whole Sign houses, marks the chart as approximate, and tells you if your Moon sign could differ.
Unknown
No Rising sign and no houses — because any value would be a guess. You still get every planet's sign and the aspects between them.
The clock problem
Your time — in which time zone?
Even with an exact time, the clock on your birth certificate followed the rules of that place in that year. Time zones and daylight saving time have changed many times around the world. Velara applies your birthplace's historical UTC offset for that date automatically. How Velara calculates.
FAQ
Birth time, quickly
Can I get a birth chart without a birth time?
Yes. Every planet's sign can be calculated from your date and place alone. What you lose is the Ascendant (Rising sign), the Midheaven and the houses — and, on days when the Moon changed sign, certainty about your Moon sign.
How much does the Rising sign depend on the time?
A lot. On average a new sign rises about every two hours, but at mid and high latitudes some signs rise in about an hour and others take nearly three. A difference of 15–30 minutes can be enough to change it.
What is birth time rectification?
It is a technique some astrologers use to estimate an unknown birth time by working backwards from life events. It is an interpretation, not a calculation, and results differ between astrologers. Velara doesn't guess a time for you.
Can I add my birth time later?
Yes. Once you find it, update your birth details and your Rising sign, houses and house-based readings appear.
