Method
Calculated first. Explained second.
Velara splits the work in two. An astronomical engine does the maths; AI only explains what the maths found. Here is exactly what each part does — and what neither of them claims.

The engine
What gets calculated
- Planet positions — Sun, Moon, Mercury through Pluto, plus Chiron, the lunar nodes and Lilith.
- Houses and angles — Ascendant, Midheaven and the twelve house cusps.
- Aspects — the angles between planets, with defined orbs.
- Dates — transits, retrograde stations and Moon phases.
The same birth data always gives the same chart. Nothing in this layer is generated by a language model.
The AI
What gets interpreted
- Your calculated chart — signs, houses and aspects, as data.
- Today's transits to your chart.
- What you choose to write — a question, a dream, an intention.
- The cards you draw in tarot and I Ching.
The model is instructed to use only the astronomical data it is given. That is an instruction, not a guarantee — which is why every position you see comes from the engine, not from the text.
Your birth data
Time zones are where charts go wrong.
A birth chart needs the exact moment in Universal Time. Getting there from “3:40 a.m. in Izmir” means knowing the clock rules of that place on that day — and those rules have changed many times: time zones moved, daylight saving time started and stopped, some years used summer time all year.
Velara looks up your birthplace and applies its historical UTC offset for your date of birth — not today's — before it calculates anything. Pick the town from the list rather than typing a nearby big city: a few degrees of longitude move the Ascendant.
Don't know your birth time? Here's exactly what Velara does without it.
Settings
The choices behind your chart.
| Item | What Velara uses |
|---|---|
| Zodiac | Tropical (0° Aries = March equinox) for your natal chart. The Vedic reading uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa. |
| Houses, exact time | Placidus. Beyond the polar circles, where Placidus is undefined, Whole Sign houses. |
| Houses, approximate time | Whole Sign, labelled as approximate. |
| No birth time | No Ascendant and no houses — planets and signs only. |
| Lunar nodes & Lilith | Mean positions. |
| Birthplace clock | Historical UTC offset for the date and place of birth. |
What we don't claim
Precise astronomy. Honest astrology.
“Accurate” at Velara refers to one thing: the astronomical calculation. The meanings astrology gives to planets, signs and aspects are a symbolic tradition. Velara presents them as a way to reflect — it doesn't predict events, and it doesn't give medical, legal or financial advice.
Your name, e-mail address and birthplace aren't sent to the AI; it receives your computed chart. What you type is sent as you wrote it, and only after you allow AI features. The details are in the Privacy Policy.
FAQ
Method, quickly
Is a birth chart from ChatGPT accurate?
A general-purpose chatbot generates text. Unless it actually runs an ephemeris calculation for your date, time and place, the planet positions it gives you are a prediction of plausible text rather than a calculation — and errors are easy to miss. Velara calculates the positions first with an astronomical engine, then hands the result to the AI to explain.
Which AI model does Velara use?
Velara currently uses OpenAI models for its written readings and the Velara AI chat. The model never calculates positions, houses, aspects or dates; it receives them from the engine.
Which features don't use AI at all?
The calculations themselves — your chart wheel, planets, houses, aspects, transit dates, retrogrades and Moon phases — are computed without AI. AI features only run after you allow them.
Does a correct calculation mean a correct reading?
No. The engine makes the astronomy precise; the meaning astrologers give to it is a symbolic tradition. Velara offers it as a tool for self-reflection — not as a prediction, and not as medical, legal or financial advice.
